Pull out your secret weapon because you are armed for battle. Winged eyeliner has been a trend for several seasons, but this spring you can swap your statement liner for a magical touch of colour. Because you know after all, a simple winged eyeliner just won’t do. There’s something more to life.

“It makes me feel more powerful,” said Wen Shi, fashion designer alumni from University of the Arts London. Shi believes that mixing a wing with colour can help one feel empowered. The designer says she would wear a colourful winged eyeliner even to work.
“If I am doing a creative shoot with my garments as a designer, I need to show people my image and my focus.” Shi says she feels more confident with coloured eyeliner because it compliments her almond shaped eyes. “Eyeliner is something I need to have as a working woman in the fashion industry.”

North Carolina based makeup artist, Meredith Corbett, uses her eyeliner to exaggerate the eyes. When asked what’s best for this season she said, “I really like the Anastasia waterproof cream colour. It brightens my eyes!”
London fashion week was all the flurry this February and plenty of bloggers and enthusiasts alike were spotted wearing the trend, whether bold or playful.

Bianca De Zilva, designer, has a persona that everyone was flocking to. She has a magnetizing style with a do-it-yourself vintage themed jacket on blaring the words “I’m so vain I know all of the songs are about me” in white bold lettering on the back. She is flipping her wavy brunette hair to the side underneath a messy ponytail, calmly wearing a catchy denim choker necklace.
“For a trend colour, I’ve seen a lot of blues. I’m also loving the reds. It’s so 90s and grunge,” she said. “I’m so glad they brought it back. But I just love a cat eyeliner, like a wing.”

With henna inscribed on her hands and shiny rings on her fingers, she points to her eyes to describe her makeup.
“You know gems, like on the inside,” she said. “At New York fashion week they did heaps of that. And lime greens.” The designer, who handcrafts her own jackets, is no stranger to the world of painting. “I painted on my freckles as well,” she said. “It’s fake,” she laughs, “it’s all fake. It’s paint, that’s what it is.”

And so it is. For centuries, paint has been used to symbolize prep for wartime. Eye makeup—worn by princes and native American warriors of old—have used paint to exemplify their tribal statements. It’s a symbol of strength and a way of communicating artistic ideas. And today, people around the world are embracing their inner self by letting their eyes do the talking.
According to recent 2017 Grammy award winner pop duo Twenty One Pilots, eyeliner does that for them, too.
“I wear some red makeup around my eyes…this idea of going out there and feeling like it’s a battle against these insecurities…(Makeup is like) warpaint when going out to battle,” said Josh Dun, Twenty One Pilots drummer.
Laura Taylor, 56, has eyes that are bright, wide and alive. When asked what her secret is, she took it up a notch by suggesting sleep helps.
“I wear a winged eyeliner almost daily. But beauty is more than skin deep. Something that we rarely hear people talk about is the importance of sleep,” says Taylor.
“You want to have sunlight while protecting your eyes and also lots of greens. You want to make sure that you have a makeup remover that you use every day that’s very, very gentle to the thin tender skin on your eyelids,” she says.
The beauty and health consultant goes on to say that people need to get back to the basics and get beauty sleep. “That goes for men and women. I’ve had a lot of beauty sleep because I’ve been sleeping for almost 57 years (laughs)!”

Hussan Ara, Fashion Illustration UAL alumni says that she only uses black eyeliner. “It seems exciting to wear coloured eyeliner, so I’m going to give it a try,” she says.
So keep your eyes peeled—you might just catch a few winged eyeliners yourself on the street or catwalk this spring. Chanel your own inner warrior by pulling off a colour wing: just add a flick of fabulosity to the upper corners of your eyelid. It’s just that simple.
Go ahead. Paint colour in your life. Because heck, sometimes you’ve just got to wing it.
