From bird paradise to village vibe, D&G adds spice to your life. SS17 Catwalk Trend Report for Uni.
MILAN, Italy — Imagine sunflowers in Tuscany with high waisted shorts, cherry reds and mandarin collars. You’ve got the SS17 Dolce & Gabbana collection.
Dancers bump into each other during the opening scene, mimicking the chaos of an Italian Market. There’s high-kicking to the beat of accordion music and a flash mob is formed, complete with an Italian-looking gentleman in black bowtie, of course.
But why the bird paradise? Dolce & Gabbana’s style isn’t rigidly Italian. It’s based on an imaginary world that changes every season. And with over 350 indigenous grape wines in Italy, it’s no wonder models were seen parading a rainbow of red lips. Think boysenberry and plum, Petite Syrah and Montepulciano red wine.

Musical notes are spotted on elegant jackets and there’s a skirt with piano keys. Puffed sleeves and ruffled blouses echo the Italian actress Claudia Cardinale’s romantic white Costume dress.

Accessories give off village-girl vibes with headpieces and wacky circular sunglasses.
With devotion for God, church and family, an Italian woman is strong and proud. This is seen throughout the look of dangling cross earrings, golden crowns and black veils.

Model Taylor Hill tears up the runway, bringing you to the darker side in killer stilettos. Loads of “V” shapes with a tight fit are seen silhouetting the hourglass frames of the body, while black lace whispers romance of the bustling streets of Burano, a trove where the most delicate laces are sold. Speaking of dimly lit candles, it’s time to call in all lovers of cuisine. Think Sophia Loren’s tasteful cookbook and you’ve got “Cucina Con Amore,” black shoes, white heels and red-checkered cloth.

Unless you’re a major fan of pasta noodles, one may never know how well this will go down on high street. Not to mention the giant lobster earrings. But with a cast of catwalking power including Sara Sampaio, Romee Strijd, and Hailey Baldwin—even they can make a can of tomato soup look good. A trend of chunky embellishments ooze with glitter, but will it function? Looks fun on stage, but super heavy when walking.
So the question is: will this collection get you saying eccellente and arrivederci for the evening? That’s for you to decide.
